Whilst researching a few weeks ago the UK regional carriers blog, I was interested by one flight in particular, to be the exact the Loganair's Westray to Papa Westray flight, which is the shortest commercial route in the world. However when wanting to find out the shortest flights for other carriers there simply isn't the information available to read up on it, so here I have researched what are the shortest routes that various British and Irish carriers fly as their shortest routes.
EasyJet
EasyJet's shortest route is another UK domestic flight, with it being the flight from Belfast International to the Isle of Man. This flight is only 74 miles long and this summer is being flown two times a week by easyJet and is scheduled to take 45 minutes flying time, with tickets available from £23.16 one way.
Ryanair
Europe's largest low cost carrier Ryanair's shortest flight can be found being operated on another domestic route, however this time in Spain. This flight is slightly longer than easyJet's at 107 miles, however flight time is still scheduled at 45 minutes. Flights on this route occur multiple times a day and tickets can be found from as little as £10 a person one way.
British Airways
Despite its name British Airway's shortest flight does not in fact operate anywhere near the UK. Instead their shortest flight is an island hoping service in the Caribbean flying from the island of Antigua to the island of St Kitts. This flight is only 62 miles long and is a continuation of the flight from London Gatwick, and can be booked from £115 taking 45 minutes of flying. However this Autumn this flight will be overtaken by an even shorter flight in the middle east, from Bahrain to Dammam in Saudia Arabia, a flight of only 53 miles. This route however is unlikely to be open to be book on its own however, meaning that Antigua to St Kitts will still be the shortest route. As for from London, the shortest flight that British Airways fly is from Heathrow to Manchester at 151 miles.
Virgin Atlantic
Currently the shortest bookable flight that Virgin Atlantic fly is their route from London Heathrow to Boston Logan airport, at 3256 miles, this route is available to book from £1547 and will take 7 and a half hours to fly. However from this Autumn Virgin will operate a shorter route than this, flying to Tel Avis from London, a route which is only 2230 miles long. However there is another scheduled route that I have found which is even shorter than both of these, however it is not available to book on its own. This flight is from St Lucia to Grenada in the Caribbean, with both services only being available to book from London Gatwick.
Flybe
The shortest route that I can find which Flybe operates is their short hop between Jersey and Guernsey. Flown multiple times a day by Flybe itself as well as their franchise partner Blue Islands, this route is only 24 miles long. On their website Flybe schedule this route to take 20 minutes with flight costing from £30 one way.
Jet 2
The shortest flight that I can find from Jet 2 is their Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam route at a length of 287 miles. This route is scheduled to take 1 hour and 15 minutes, and tickets for this route cost as little as £31 for this winter.
Aer Lingus
The shortest route operated by Aer Lingus is in fact operated by their subsidiary, Aer Lingus Reigonal, on the route from Dublin to the Isle of Mann. Operated by an ATR 72 aircraft the route is only 80 miles long and is scheduled to take 50 minutes, with flights available from £32 one way.
TUI
To give a definitive answer to which route that TUI operate which is their shortest is quite hard due to the large amount of charter flights that they operate, which means that there are many routes that they fly which are unavailable to buy on their website. However basing this list off their website the shortest route that TUI operate is their Salzburg to London Gatwick, which is served once a week during the summer. This flight is available to book from £179 one way and is 634 miles long and is scheduled to take 1 hours and 55 minutes.
